The time has arrived: the PokéPod Project’s first mini anthology for all 28 of Unown’s forms is here! This is a collection of shiny new stories written for the project by 24 writers and performed by 13 podficcers. All works can be browsed at the AO3 collection or by using the spreadsheet linked below.

Re-Date and Final Check Reminder

Into the Unown's AO3 collection is due to reveal in three hours, so this is your reminder to re-date your works! Re-dating means your fics/pods will show up at the top of their fandom tags when people search by new, rather than stay buried back in March.

To re-date, locate your work(s) by navigating to your Works page, then clicking the “Works in Collections” button, top right. Open the work, hit edit, and scroll to the “Set a different publication date” checkbox. When you select the checkbox, a dropdown will appear. Change the work’s publication date to today, then save by hitting post. It may take a few minutes to take effect.

Other suggested checks:

Don’t forget to add any podfic tags you might want and include “[Podfic]” in your title (or however you like to signify that.)
Is the Unown form you wrote about tagged as a character? This isn't a requirement, but it would be fun!

Into the Unown - Signups Open

Signups are now open for both writers and podficcers for the Into the Unown round! They will close for writers at 20:00PM UTC on Sunday 8 March. Signups for podficcers close at 20:00PM UTC on 17 March.

As our event isn't a traditional AO3 exchange or prompt challenge, signups will take place via Google Forms. Assignments will be sent via email, though final works (fic and podfic) must be posted to our AO3 Collection. If you do not already have an AO3 account and would like one, please contact a mod to request an invite code.

Into the Unown: Rules & Schedule

Welcome to the first bonus/mini round of The PokéPod Project, a collaborative fan project that aims to create a fic and podfic about every Pokémon. This bonus round focuses on Unown, a generation two Pokémon with 28 forms. The collection and anthology are scheduled to reveal on 6 April 2026, the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release of Pokémon 3: The Movie in North America.

How this works

Writers sign up to create 1 – 2 stories about Unown. Unlike the project's main rounds, Unown forms will be assigned randomly, so participants really will be going... into the un(kn)own! Each story should focus on the Unown form assigned, be between 100 – 1000 words, and be posted to this round's AO3 Collection by the deadline. All participating writers consent to their work being podficced - this means a fellow Pokémon fan will perform a reading of your story and post it as a separate work using AO3's “inspired by” function.

Podficcers sign up to record between 1 – 2 stories written for the project and are also randomly assigned Unown forms.

Once all stories have been written and podficced, they will be revealed alongside a podfic anthology, unleashing all the Unown fanworks into the world to become known!

Please read the rules below in full before signing up, even if you're an event veteran. As this is not a traditional AO3 exchange/challenge, there are parts of the creation process that will differ from what you're used to, from sign-ups to posting.

Into the Unown: Schedule Announcement

We’re excited to release the schedule for the upcoming mini round: Into the Unown. This project spotlights Unown, a gen two Pokémon with 28 forms. In keeping with the “un(k)nown” theme, participants will be randomly assigned an Unown form to create for.

Our normal event rules will apply for the mini round, with the only changes being a cap of two works per participant and the element of randomness added to assignments. Full signup information will be shared when signups open.

You can leave feedback as a comment on this post, via a tumblr ask (we won’t publish it), or by emailing pokepodproject@gmail.com.

Firstly, here’s what we plan to change for the next round:

Rules addition: No generative AI use.
Clarifying or changing deadline times for podficcers.*

*We’re particularly interested in hearing from our podfic participants about this. It’s common for podfic events to have a “while it’s still midnight anywhere in the world” deadline. That doesn’t work for us mods personally, but as our UTC deadline confused a lot of this year’s podfic participants, we’d like to hear your thoughts on how we can make our deadline clearer or what alternative times work for you.

We have a specific question regarding the podfic anthology, so we’ve make a poll! You can vote below or on our tumblr. (Please only vote on one of the polls to avoid skewing the results against people who don’t have accounts on both sites 🙏) The results may affect whether we continue creating an anthology as part of the project going forward.

From peasina: It was an honour to see people returning to create again for a new batch of Pokémon and wonderful to welcome new people to the PokePod Project this year. We had fifty fewer Pokémon to create fanworks for, but the enthusiasm from participants was wonderful to witness. I always end up finding a new appreciation for Pokémon I’d previously overlooked thanks to this project, and I’m really looking forward to listening to this year’s anthology where I’ll inevitably find more! Thank you so much for being here.

The podfic deadline has passed! Behind the scenes, we're now compiling our Adopt-a-Pokemon (pinch hit) post which should go live tomorrow (in roughly 14 hours) and starting to compile the podfic anthology!

With little over a week remaining for writers, we’d like to draw your attention to this year’s Rare Candies collection. This is a collection for PokéPod Project treats, aka extra stories about gen two Pokémon that can be added by anyone. Works posted to this collection do not have to follow the main project rules, though the author of any fics added will be opting into having them podficced.

The email contains posting instructions, but as a reminder, all works need to be posted to our AO3 collection by the deadline (12 September, 20:00 PM UTC.)

Again, many many thanks to Asymptotical for her spreadsheet prowess, without which we could never handmatch 99 Pokemon to 71 writers this quickly.

Writers, you do not need to keep your assigned Pokemon a secret. If you'd like to squee about or discuss your assignment anywhere publicly, feel free. If you happen to be on Tumblr, we even have a tag for that!

Writer Signups - Closed!

Writer signups are now closed. Thank you so much to everyone who signed up!

We are now matching participants to Pokemon and will send out assignment emails before 22 Aug, 20:00PM UTC at the latest. With the number of signups, we are not expecting there to be any initial pinch hits, but keep an eye on this community for updates on which Pokemon need adopting during the writing period.

You can still sign up as a podficcer until 12 September.

There are a little under 24 hours remaining for writers to sign up to The PokePod Project. Signups close at 20:00PM UTC on Wednesday 20 August. Here’s a countdown to that time.

As a reminder, podficcer signups are open throughout the writing period and close 12 September!
